Playing Golf at St. Andrew’s Scotland {Bryan-College Station Travel Photographer}

Yep, I like the sound of that-travel photographer. The ultimate goal would be to have people pay you to travel to locations, shoot awesome landscape photography or even better wedding photography and come home feeling good about your vacation! I know there are a few of you that follow the blog so I’m sure you will remember some of my posts from our vacation in Scotland. I will have to say it is right up there in my list of top ten places to visit.

While we were visiting Scotland, Robert and Steve (brother in law) made arrangements to play one of the courses at St. Andrew’s. They were able to get on the Eden Course which is very close to the Old Course. Some of the images are ones that Robert took while he was playing and the others were some I took when we were walking around St. Andrew’s. Enjoy!

Premier Bride Cover Shoot {Bryan-College Station Wedding Photographer}

I am so excited about finally posting some of the images we shot when asked to do the cover shoot for the Spring issue of Premier Bride. The Astin Mansion was the site for the shoot and I couldn’t have asked for a better location. I think you will understand when you see the dresses that were picked for our awesome model, Christine Malphurs, to wear. Jennifer had  Theresa Rocabado and Candi Gordon from My Makeup Rocks help with hair and makeup and I will have to say-Christine’s makeup did rock! I especially loved the choice of red lipstick at the end of the night. Both Robert and I had an awesome time shooting and trying out new ideas for lighting and posing and we are so pleased to be able to share the images with everyone. My very favorite image is one that I had enlarged to a 16×20 and I am constantly reminded of the silent film stars and the 1920’s. I think this is one of the most romantic times in history as far as fashion goes. The dresses that were used came from Special Occasions Bridal in Brenham and were stunning. My new favorite gown designer is Maggie Sottero and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bride in one of her gowns that looked bad.

Don’t forget to check out the cover of the Spring issue of Premier Bride and the inside bridal gown spread. We are under the section on Astin Allure.  We hope you enjoy the images and please leave us a comment or two on what you think.

All Boy! {Bryan-College Station Children’s Photographer}

All boy! That’s exactly what I thought when Grayson came into the studio the other day. I love his little cowboy outfit and as I understand it, it’s one of his favorites. He even had the spurs to go along with the boots. I should have asked him if he knew how to two step yet? Of course, all little boys have a thing about planes and Grayson was no exception. I had lots of fun coaxing out a grin or two from him.  I hope you enjoy!

Why You Shouldn’t Skimp on a Wedding Photographer

This is being reposted from another photographer’s blog! While the wording is not mine, the sentiments are.

Vanessa Dewson, a professional wedding photographer in Ottawa and Kawartha Lakes, Canada , explains in language a customer understands, why good wedding photography costs what it does and why skimping on photography is a disastrous choice.  Excerpted from Avoid Hiring a Cheap Wedding Photographer on her blog Vanessa Dewson Photography + Design.

….And now here I am on the other side, listening to brides and grooms who seem to want awesome photography for a rock bottom price AND own all the digital negatives at the end of the day. Trust me, I know how expensive a wedding can be and how desperately you want to cut a few corners to bring the overall cost down, but I just don’t think photography is the place to do that. It will be your only lasting visual reminder of your day and frankly, if you are spending a good chunk of change on your wedding, you want professional artwork to remember it by and not just settle for snapshots.

I don’t think many people know what it takes to shoot and edit a wedding and create a beautiful album. I have spent up to 12 hours on the day of a wedding, then more than 40 hours editing and laying out an album, making revisions, etc… As a professional, I value my time as an expert and an artist. I want to work with clients who value my work as well and don’t just see me as another line in their budget. Yes there are ‘weekend warriors’ out there who offer their time and all the files for ridiculous prices, but I can almost guarantee they aren’t making any money and the quality is not nearly as good since they are still working other jobs that are allowing them to pursue this as a hobby. Professionals are constantly working to improve their craft through workshops, forums, conferences and competitions, as well as investing in top-of-the-line equipment and software and using professional labs and suppliers that really produce a far superior product than any online or in-store photo lab.

[Photography] will be your only lasting visual reminder of your day and frankly, if you are spending a good chunk of change on your wedding, you want professional artwork to remember it by and not just settle for snapshots

I also know so many people who just got the files and didn’t do anything with their images for well over a year! The advantage of having someone else create an album for you is that

  • It actually gets done
  • A  good photographer is building a story when choosing which moments and details to capture.

How is someone else expected to sift through hundreds of images and figure out the best way to tell it? It would be like asking a bakery to give you all the ingredients and you would then have to make your own wedding cake. I can guarantee it won’t be nearly as nice or taste as good as it would be if you let a professional do their job.

If you really, truly cannot afford a professional, find someone who is striving to be one, whether a student or someone looking to build their portfolio. Help them out by showing them the style of photography you love and I’m sure they will do their very best. And you never know, you just might be hiring the next rising star!

I hope this helps educate engaged couples about the value of hiring a professional and doesn’t come across as a rant. I just want brides and grooms to be left with nothing but the best memories from their wedding day. Don’t just take it from me, here is a blog post I came across where a bride DID choose a cheap photographer and regrets it: http://everylastdetailblog.com/wedding-planning/i-took-the-cheap-photographer-route/

Ok, so now that you know WHY it’s better to hire pro, HOW do you choose? Well, a portfolio is a good indication of their skill but the best way would be to meet face to face and see if not just their style but their personality and philosophy fits with yours. The last thing you want is someone you don’t click with because you just won’t get the same results as you would with someone who totally puts you at ease.

I’m Yours! {Bryan-College Station Boudoir Photographer}

kkirchoff-52I loved meeting Kari. She is such an upbeat woman who is in the midst of planning her wedding in Corpus Christi. Kari participated in our “Gift of You” special and we had such a good time getting to know each other a little better. Kari plans to attend vet school out of the country after getting married. When we had her presentation session, I got to meet her fiance, Josh. I think he is just perfect for Kari. He is attentive and shows a real interest in her as a woman. He even enjoyed picking out her pictures. (I wonder why) Kari did this as a special gift for him and I think he really liked it.  Have fun viewing a few images from Kari’s session.

Landon’s 1st official studio session {Bryan-College Station baby photographer}

I love babies. In a perfect world, I would have loved having two girls and 2 boys. But the wonderful thing about your children growing up is that one day they become parents and everything becomes right in the world again, because you instantly become a grandparent. Babies are special, they have a certain quality that makes everyone stand in awe of life in general. Babies are soft, cuddly and just downright cute especially my grandkids. I dare anyone to say differently. I love Landon.  He has this beautiful baby smell to him and his skin is so beautiful and he has the cutest mouth and oh my he has the Norwood ears. He is going to have so much fun growing up. I know that the men in his life will mold and shape him into a good, responsible, God-fearing man and the women in his life will teach him how to be kind to others and be generous with his time and love. Anyway, here are a few images of Landon and his family. Please enjoy as I share a part of my life with you, my readers.

Snow, Snow Go Away, Come Again Another Day!

Today I’m blogging on a more personal note. It’s 6:40pm and it’s still snowing outside. I decided to take some personal time and take a few images of the snow around our house. I especially love the golf course. I looked for those hard-core golfers but didn’t see a single person on the course except for silly me.  It was fun just doing something for me today. Everyone should take a moment, take stock of all the wonderful things they have-family, friends, a relationship with their Creator. All these things are precious. Enjoy!

Hullabaloo! Caneck! Caneck! {Bryan-College Station Boudoir Photographer}

Just wanted to let everyone see what cute nieces I have. First meet Morgan. She is a freshman this year at TAMU and is studying International Business. Last semester she studied Chinese and I give her kudos for that. Morgan is following in the family tradition of attending Texas A&M and is loving every minute of it. Doesn’t she have the prettiest eyes? One is green and the other is brown.

a STAR is born! Meet baby Landon {Bryan-College Station Baby Photography}

I can’t wait for you to meet little Landon Norwood. He is the newest addition to the Norwood family and is our 4th grandchild. We are now even with 2 boys and 2 girls. Landon is just the cutest little guy and while he was pretty tolerant through most of our session, he wasn’t quite as happy about some of Nana’s ideas as I would have liked him to be. One day when he is all grown up, I’ll remind him of it. Landon’s daddy is a big hockey fan so the room is decorated all in hockey. So here is the post that should have been posted weeks ago but I’ve been a little behind. I hope you enjoy the images.
